Key Visual and Physical "Tells"
- Bezel Action and Finish: On a genuine Rolex, the bezel should turn smoothly and easily with 24 distinct, firm clicks. Counterfeits often have "gritty" or loose rotation, and the engraved numbers may not curve correctly with the bezel's shape.
- Cyclops Magnification: The "Cyclops" lens over the date should provide exactly 2.5x magnification. Fakes often have weaker magnification (around 1.5x) or off-center placement.
- Printing Sharpness: Under magnification, all dial text, the Rolex coronet, and minute markers must be crisp. Replicas frequently show fuzzy edges, irregular spacing, or smudging.
- Hand Stack and GMT Function: On authentic movements, the "local" hour hand should sit at the bottom (closest to the dial), with the GMT hand stacked above it. Many fakes use standard movements that result in an incorrect hand order or a GMT hand that does not track time correctly.
- Luminescence (Lume): Modern Rolex GMT models use Chromalight, which glows bright blue. Fakes often glow green, dim quickly, or have splotchy, uneven application.
